Steve DiPaola builds his own computational art systems, writing the underlying code and running it entirely on local machines. Decades before generative AI entered the cultural mainstream, he trained as a painter and began deconstructing traditional picture-making into autonomous algorithmic behaviors — particle systems, evolutionary search, and custom neural models for his solo and collaborative still, video, and interactive installation works.

At the core of DiPaola’s practice is a pursuit of the “ghost in the machine”—coaxing visceral emotion and human spirit out of cold computational logic. Rather than generating images from text prompts, he navigates an open-ended cognitive journey through spaces of aesthetic possibility. Every piece originates from his own prior artworks, archival studies, or living biological inputs, balancing deliberate analytical structure with loose, associative discovery. The resulting work fractures figurative forms through a Cubist vocabulary and an Expressionist palette, producing painterly, multidimensional spaces where human presence remains sovereign. His work has been featured in major international galleries, touring solo exhibitions, and museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA, Tate Modern, and the Smithsonian Institution.
