Abstract:\u00a0 <\/strong>The rapid advancement of cognitive-based AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach creativity and expression in various fields, from the arts to scientific discovery. This lecture will explore the impact of AI on the human creative process, discussing both the opportunities and challenges that arise from the use of these new tools. Steve DiPaola, (Stanford, now SFU) known to be both a practicing new media artist and a leading AI research scientist, will discuss and demonstrate many examples of these new systems and their applications in health, education, art, entertainment, and design.<\/p>\n

Biography:\u00a0 <\/strong>Steve DiPaola, active as an artist and scientist, serves as a professor and researcher at Simon Fraser University where he heads the I-Viz Lab. The lab, composed of approximately ~10 computer-based PhDs, Postdocs, and Grads\u201472% of whom are women\u2014focuses on the interplay between cognitive-based Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality. Before joining Simon Fraser University, Steve was at Stanford University and spent a decade as a senior researcher at NYIT Computer Graphics Lab, a pioneering establishment in high-end 3D techniques.<\/p>\n

Steve has over 100 computer science-based publications, patents, and books. He has also held senior roles at companies such as Electronic Arts and Saatchi & Saatchi Innovation, while consulting for companies like HP, Microsoft, Adobe, and the Institute for the Future. In his parallel professional art career, Steve’s work has been exhibited internationally, including the A.I.R. Tenderpixel, and Tibor de Nagy galleries in NYC\/London as well as museums MoMA, Tate, Whitney Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian. He co-curated the first computer art show in a major NYC gallery in 1988 and had one of the first one-man travelling shows (darwinsgaze.com)\u00a0 of his AI art.<\/p>\n
